2. Reflect upon whether you think the business model used in Centennial High School's Marketing and Business Academy, could be successful at the elementary, middle school or community college level. School Based Enterprises are most successful when they are integrated into the classroom curriculum - i.e. when they become co-curricular. Often times schools have students operate a "school store" in which the primary motive is fund raising and the only relationship to the curriculum is that students work in and manage the store. Provide at least five examples of how a school store could be integrated into a teacher's classroom curriculum - beyond just having students perform on-the-job duties in the store. Can you find any other examples of School Based Enterprises? Provide a link or video to at least one other School Based Enterprises.
I think that the business model could be used, it would have to be tweaked to meet the needs to the other schools audiences. As long as the business plan is solid it shouldn’t be a problem. There are many benefits of using a school store that is integrated. Students could learn advanced skills that cannot be learned on the job. The students would have a didactic foundation that could be built upon with practical application in the store. Students would be able to learn all aspects of the business such as taxes, payroll, and managing employees. I think by coupling on the job training with actual course work you are better able to promote success.
Here is a link to a site that has other types of school based enterprises.

Unit 9 Job Shadowing
1. There are many great resources on the web for job shadowing. For example at http://www.schools.utah.gov/cte/wbl_manual_jobshadow.html you can find a very detailed job shadow handbook. Find at least three web resources related to job shadowing that you feel are a valuable resource. List the web site and a brief description on what the site has of value. If you were going to have students participate in job shadowing, what do you think would be the essential components to ensure a successful student experience?
http://internships.about.com/od/internships101/a/whatisjobshadowing.htm
This is site provides very basic description and steps to set up a job shadowing experience.
http://www.jobshadow.com/
This site claims that a person can shadow real peoples jobs online. At first I chuckled at the thought of the site, however I then clicked on “bailbondsman” as I have been fortunate to have never needed one so I am not exactly sure what they do. I was pleasantly surprised of the layout. You get interview information about all aspects of a job. Actually a good reference.
http://www.careerconnector.com/scripts/findjobshadow2.cfm
This site is a search engine to find an employer who are open to job shadows. I did a search and there were 66 companies that allow this.
I feel that knowledge is power, and it the student must do their research. This will ensure a successful experience.

Legal Issues
1. Does your district currently have a policy to cover student accidents for school sponsored activities? Would this cover work based learning experiences?
2. Does your district have optional accident/health insurance that students can purchase? (Check with the Athletics department as some student athletes are required to participate in these types of policies). Could you require CTE students to participate to cover work based learning experiences?
The school district I spoke with does not have a policy that covers student accidents. They stated that the student would go under the parents policy or they provide information on optional insurance that can be purchased by the students family to cover the student at a very reasonable price. This policy has multiple options such as 24 hour coverage or only during/at school. The person I spoke with explained that participation in the insurance is strictly voluntary. I think you could require it and just write it into the class like a participation fee. You might see some resistance from some parents but a rational person would see the benefits. In a perfect world there would be some sort of financial assistance for those who cannot afford the insurance.

Unit 4 Q2
2. Describe how you would recruit (marketing strategies) and choose (are there prerequisites/requirements for participation; will you use an interview process) students for participation in your Cooperative Education program.
My most important goal is that other school work does not suffer as a result of being in the CoOp CTE program. So, grades will play a role to a certain extent. I recognize that CTE is the only way for some students, so this will be weighed during the process.
Students would be recruited via every communication medium available; counselors office, school newspaper, PTA/PTO. Students would be screened by a board of sorts and scored based on many factors such as grades, work ethic, and teacher/parent recommendations. I am hesitant to place a hard grade letter as the minimum to be considered. Every student will be evaluated on their merits.
Our selection process would include an interview. I think this is an important facet especially for those who are not the best students, but would receive the greatest benefit from being in the program (as I stated above, some people are not very academic however could benefit from CTE and it maybe their only shot at a good job). The interview, would be done by the advisory board. There would be no student representation on this board to protect the innocent and FERPA.

Unit 4 Q1
1. Describe how you would find/recruit/choose student on-the-job training stations for your Cooperative Education program. There are many Cooperative Education programs in Arizona that rely on the student to choose their own training station. Reflect and comment on this practice as part of your reflection.
If I were in this position, I would find participants through a variety of fashions. 1st, I would use the resources of the counselors office. The school counselor is well equipped to recommend students that would be successful. I think this important, as I want to ensure that the “core” course grades aren’t going to suffer. 2nd, I would use the student organizations such as the school newspaper or the CCTV. 3rd, I would use the PTA to get the word out.
Students would be picked on their ability to be successful in this as well as the core courses. So myself, and most likely the counselor representative would go through the applications and choose people based on grades.
I do believe that the student needs some ownership in the choice of topic. After all, they are entering this program because they have goals. There need to be boundries. Obviously we will not be able to accommodate everyone, however this being said, we need to put forth the effort to see if every avenue is pursued.

Compare the CTE Internship and Cooperative Education.
Compare the CTE Internship and Cooperative Education. Reflect and provide your thoughts. I do not want you to write a compare/contrast. I want to know your opinion.
As I read through this information, the CTE Internship seems like a better deal for the student. This program, while designated for seniors and 16 years of age or older provides necessary opportunities that may not be afforded under cooperative education. While, they are still considered children, most seniors are very near adulthood and that being said, adults learn in a different fashion; mostly hands on and by performing the task.
Another interesting fact, is that the teacher who supervises must be CTE credentialed. As I was setting up my interview for unit 2, and the teacher asked me to define what coop was (he is in charge of the program). It turns out he is an English teacher chasing a stipend and was unsure of what I meant. The important point here is that the person running things has interest in the program. I think that is a sign of potential success.

Compare the Arizona Cooperative Education Standards with the Nebraska Cooperative Education Standards.
Compare the Arizona Cooperative Education Standards with the Nebraska Cooperative Education Standards. Reflect and provide your thoughts. I do not want you to write a compare/contrast. I want to know your opinion.
As I performed the research for this, I kept thinking that it seems that Arizona keeps it so simple compared to Nebraska. It seems to me that the simpler the program is the more fluid it will be.
In our reading, we learned that programs must contain the following; related school based learning, work-based learning, supporting activities. Both organizations meet this criteria although I do believe that the Nebraska system seems to have more safety nets or fails safes in place to ensure that the rules are followed.
