2. Reflect upon whether you think the business model used in Centennial High School's Marketing and Business Academy, could be successful at the elementary, middle school or community college level. School Based Enterprises are most successful when they are integrated into the classroom curriculum - i.e. when they become co-curricular. Often times schools have students operate a "school store" in which the primary motive is fund raising and the only relationship to the curriculum is that students work in and manage the store. Provide at least five examples of how a school store could be integrated into a teacher's classroom curriculum - beyond just having students perform on-the-job duties in the store. Can you find any other examples of School Based Enterprises? Provide a link or video to at least one other School Based Enterprises.
I think that the business model could be used, it would have to be tweaked to meet the needs to the other schools audiences. As long as the business plan is solid it shouldn’t be a problem. There are many benefits of using a school store that is integrated. Students could learn advanced skills that cannot be learned on the job. The students would have a didactic foundation that could be built upon with practical application in the store. Students would be able to learn all aspects of the business such as taxes, payroll, and managing employees. I think by coupling on the job training with actual course work you are better able to promote success.
Here is a link to a site that has other types of school based enterprises.

Unit 9 Job Shadowing
1. There are many great resources on the web for job shadowing. For example at http://www.schools.utah.gov/cte/wbl_manual_jobshadow.html you can find a very detailed job shadow handbook. Find at least three web resources related to job shadowing that you feel are a valuable resource. List the web site and a brief description on what the site has of value. If you were going to have students participate in job shadowing, what do you think would be the essential components to ensure a successful student experience?
http://internships.about.com/od/internships101/a/whatisjobshadowing.htm
This is site provides very basic description and steps to set up a job shadowing experience.
http://www.jobshadow.com/
This site claims that a person can shadow real peoples jobs online. At first I chuckled at the thought of the site, however I then clicked on “bailbondsman” as I have been fortunate to have never needed one so I am not exactly sure what they do. I was pleasantly surprised of the layout. You get interview information about all aspects of a job. Actually a good reference.
http://www.careerconnector.com/scripts/findjobshadow2.cfm
This site is a search engine to find an employer who are open to job shadows. I did a search and there were 66 companies that allow this.
I feel that knowledge is power, and it the student must do their research. This will ensure a successful experience.

Legal Issues
1. Does your district currently have a policy to cover student accidents for school sponsored activities? Would this cover work based learning experiences?
2. Does your district have optional accident/health insurance that students can purchase? (Check with the Athletics department as some student athletes are required to participate in these types of policies). Could you require CTE students to participate to cover work based learning experiences?
The school district I spoke with does not have a policy that covers student accidents. They stated that the student would go under the parents policy or they provide information on optional insurance that can be purchased by the students family to cover the student at a very reasonable price. This policy has multiple options such as 24 hour coverage or only during/at school. The person I spoke with explained that participation in the insurance is strictly voluntary. I think you could require it and just write it into the class like a participation fee. You might see some resistance from some parents but a rational person would see the benefits. In a perfect world there would be some sort of financial assistance for those who cannot afford the insurance.
