2. Describe how you would recruit (marketing strategies) and choose (are there prerequisites/requirements for participation; will you use an interview process) students for participation in your Cooperative Education program.
My most important goal is that other school work does not suffer as a result of being in the CoOp CTE program. So, grades will play a role to a certain extent. I recognize that CTE is the only way for some students, so this will be weighed during the process.
Students would be recruited via every communication medium available; counselors office, school newspaper, PTA/PTO. Students would be screened by a board of sorts and scored based on many factors such as grades, work ethic, and teacher/parent recommendations. I am hesitant to place a hard grade letter as the minimum to be considered. Every student will be evaluated on their merits.
Our selection process would include an interview. I think this is an important facet especially for those who are not the best students, but would receive the greatest benefit from being in the program (as I stated above, some people are not very academic however could benefit from CTE and it maybe their only shot at a good job). The interview, would be done by the advisory board. There would be no student representation on this board to protect the innocent and FERPA.
You mention PTA/PTO. I think that is a great idea. You can take advantage of word of mouth among the parents. We do not have, or at least not active, a PTA/PTO. What a great way to get parents involved beyond parent teacher meetings. This also works for attracting businesses as most all parents are employed or are employeers.
ReplyDeleteIt is unfortunate that your PTO is not active. I really think it is paramount, especially now (Our PTO was able to fund the PE teachers salary when the school was going to cut the position). But all this being said, people talk and the parents could spread the word.
